You will sleep in a gypsy caravan, known as a bow top open lot wagon, pulled on to an old cider apple orchard not far from the farmhouse. The bow top sleeps two in a cosy traditional extending double bed. You need to be reasonably agile to climb in!
Traditionally cooking and washing was done outside. There is an open fire for cooking but nearby there is an early ’70’s ‘flash trailer’, sometimes referred to as a showmans caravan, with fridge, gas cooker and comfortable seating for rainy days. It can also be used as alternative accommodation if sleeping in the bow top is not for you.
What do you get?
Bed linen is provided as are basic utensils, crockery and cutlery, nothing fancy though. Toilet facilities are catered for with an environmentally friendly compost loo, it sounds primitive but is, in fact, quite civilised. It saves water and avoids the pollution of chemical toilets and WCs.
Half a dozen free range eggs, a pack of sausages from the nearby farm shop and a jug of local farmhouse cider will be provided to get you started, after that you will have to forage for yourselves. Some wood is supplied for an open fire, additional supplies can be purchased nearby.
What’s down the road?
There is a farm shop in the village, about 15 minutes walk away. Nearest general shops are in the small towns of Somerton or Langport, both about three miles away and each with a small supermarket, butchers and other basics.
Ten minutes brisk walk will get you to the Halfway House, an unspoilt award winning freehouse selling an excellent range of real ales, local cider and home made food. No fruit machines, juke box or piped music, just good company in an old country inn untouched by the passing of time.
We do not guarantee the weather or supply sunshine on demand. Your stay may be sunny and warm or soggy and cold, either way we hope that all our visitors can leave refreshed, relaxed and revitalised.
